The magnitude 6.0 quake struck off the island’s southern coast at 2 p.m. local time on Saturday, according to the US Geological Survey (07:00 GMT).

At a depth of 82 kilometres, it was centred 45 kilometres (28 miles) south of Sumberpucung town in Malang District, East Java province (51 miles). In a statement, Rahmat Triyono, the head of Indonesia’s earthquake and tsunami centre, said the undersea earthquake had no potential to cause a tsunami.
