On Indonesia’s main island of Java, a powerful earthquake killed at least 8 people and 1,300 destroyed houses, and shook the tourist hotpots of Bali without triggering tsunami warnings.

Magnitude of earth quake in Indonesia

The magnitude 6.0 quake struck off the island’s southern coast at 2 p.m. local time on Saturday, according to the US Geological Survey (07:00 GMT).

At a depth of 82 kilometres, it was centred 45 kilometres (28 miles) south of Sumberpucung town in Malang District, East Java province (51 miles). In a statement, Rahmat Triyono, the head of Indonesia’s earthquake and tsunami centre, said the undersea earthquake had no potential to cause a tsunami.
