United Nations Security Council will meet again on Friday to discuss the Palestinian crisis

UN (Monitoring Desk) Despite the United States’ continued opposition to the UN playing a part in the crisis, Tunisia, Norway, and China have demanded that another emergency United Nations Security Council meeting be held on Friday to discuss the deteriorating situation in Palestine.

The meeting will be open to the public and include both Israelis and Palestinians, negotiators told AFP on Wednesday. Since Monday, the Council has held two closed-door video conferencing, with the US, a close ally of Israel rejecting adoption of a joint statement, claiming that it would not “help de-escalate” the situation.

According to a delegate who spoke on the requested anonymity, the Palestinians pressed for a third meeting in less than a week. A new meeting’s aim is “to try to contribute to peace… and to have a Security Council that can express itself and call for a settlement,” according to another diplomat who did not want to be identified.

According to AFP, Israel has refused to allow the United Nations Security Council to interfere in the conflict, despite Washington’s decision to do so. According to multiple outlets, 14 of the Council’s 15 members were in favour of adopting a joint statement aimed at easing tensions earlier Wednesday.On condition of anonymity, diplomats told AFP that the US saw the Security Council meeting as ample evidence of concern, and that a comment would be “counter – productive.”
